»Our Peace Statue Ari in Berlin«

The decolonial feminist resistance from South Korea

Trigger warning: sexualised violence

The Peace Statue symbolizes the courage of the so-called "comfort women". They broke the long silence and in 1991 publicized the sexualized violence against women and girls during World War II, which triggered the Me Too movement in Asia at the time. The “comfort women” have been demonstrating every Wednesday since January 1992 in Seoul/Korea. At 1,000. Wednesday demonstration, the first peace statue was unveiled there. The Peace Statue holds the incredible empowering power to decolonize the world from a feminist perspective. That is why their sisters are invited outside of Asia to the USA, Canada or Australia. In September 2020, the peace statue named Ari also entered Berlin with an official permit. After the Japanese government asked Germany to remove the statue, people from all over the world were able to prevent the demolition. The neighbors shout: "Ari is Moabite!" or "The Statue of Peace is ours!" Although so many people want Ari to stay, she is currently only tolerated. Let's think about strategies together how Ari can stay in Berlin forever!
