The occupation of the TU Berlin by refugees in 1991/1992

This year's Dekoloniale Festival takes place on the premises of the TU Berlin and also refers to the history of resistance and activism at this location. The five-month occupation of the TU Berlin by refugees and allies in 1991/92 is a historic, if often forgotten, milestone in the history of the movement of asylum seekers and former contract workers from East Germany. With the occupation and founding of an "anti-racist center" at the TU, a space for protection and action was created. On the one hand, this can be understood as a direct reaction to the failure of the German authorities, who after the racist attacks on asylum accommodation in the 1990s, especially in Hoyerswerda in the summer of 1991, did not take adequate measures to protect those affected. On the other hand, the protest was directed against the discriminatory German asylum policy as a whole, against forced distribution and compulsory residency.

The occupation of the TU Berlin is an exemplary starting point of the workshop to discuss continuities of anti-racist self-organization, solidarity and places of remembrance in a power-critical manner. Following on from this, we will jointly examine the (im)possibilities and specific examples of the presentation of these resistance stories in museums.
