The Eulenburg Expedition to East Asia (1859–1862), named after its leader Friedrich Albrecht zu Eulenburg (1815–1881), who was supported by Prussia and represented the German Customs Union, is considered a pioneer of modern German-East Asian relations.
The goal of the expedition was to establish diplomatic and commercial relations between the German states and East Asia, marking Germany's entry into the political and colonial stage in Asia. The expedition visited Japan, China, and Siam. Unequal treaties were concluded with these countries – a characteristic feature of Western diplomacy in East Asia during the height of imperialism and colonialism.
The significance of this expedition should not be underestimated. The resulting diplomatic relations between Germany and East Asia had profound effects on regional and global history, related to both German imperialism and the modernization processes in Japan and China.
