Dekoloniale [Re]visions: Restitution, African Cultures of Remembrance and the "Neue Museum" – Wilhelmstraße 92, Berlin, Germany
[Re]visions: DiscoursesStatements from African civil society, 2021
In this second edition of the Dekoloniale [Re]visions Think Tank, we address the long history and new present of restitution demands: How do contemporary African cultures of remembrance shape themselves in the absence of their cultural and sacred objects and human remains from colonial contexts? How (radically) must the museum as an institution be rethought? How can this 'New African Museum' become a vibrant space of polylogue, commemoration, and exhibition—with civil society participation?
Video inputs by: Dr. Dr. Kwame Opoku (cultural critic & restitution expert), Laidlaw Peringanda (activist & head of the Namibian Genocide Association), Sénamé Koffi Agbodjinou (architect & anthropologist), Gabriel Mzei Orio (head of Old Moshi Cultural Tourism Enterprise), Shiynyuy Gad (Nso activist).
Live guests: Dr. Andreas Görgen (Foreign Office), Nadja Ofuatey-Alazard (Dekoloniale), Dr. Dr. Kwame Opoku ), Prof. Dr. Bénédicte Savoy (art historian, TU Berlin) & Prof. Dr. Facil Tesfaye (historian, The Advisors, University of Hong Kong) moderated by Karen Taylor
