Dekoloniale Festival Tour 2022 – Berlin, South, Germany
in[ter]ventions: Festivals
"[De]colonial Migrations" was the title of the 2022 Dekoloniale Festival, where we took a closer look at the districts of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg and Tempelhof-Schöneberg. As in the period between the Berlin Africa Conference in 1884/85 and the Nazi seizure of power in 1933, these Berlin districts are still characterized today by numerous networks of actors of African descent who, despite their significant influence, are neither anchored in the collective memory nor visible in public space.
Together with Vitjitua Ndjiharine (NAM), Maya Alam (D/USA), and Lulu Jemimah—the three artists of the Dekoloniale Residency 2022—as well as historians and activists, who each gave brief presentations, we visited significant historical sites of anti-colonial resistance in southern Berlin. The festival focused on the artistic works and urban interventions of the Dekoloniale Berlin Residents 2022, as well as sites of colonial migrant biographies, which we visited and historically contextualized during a full-day decolonial city walk.
