Internationaler Tag zur Erinnerung an den Versklavungshandel
The time has finally come: After decades of civil society engagement, especially from the African/Afrodiasporic/Black community, Petersallee, named by the National Socialists in 1939, is being renamed to Maji-Maji-Allee and Anna-Mungunda-Allee !
Berlin will hereby end the public tribute to Carl Peters, one of the cruelest German colonial criminals and racists. The Berlin-Mitte district has decided to instead honor the important Maji Maji resistance movement of 1905-07 in the former colony of "German East Africa" (today: Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi) and the Ovaherero anti-apartheid fighter Anna Kakurakaze Mungunda, who was murdered in Windhoek (today: Namibia) in 1959.
The so-called African Quarter is thus taking a big step forward on its journey from a place of German colonial propaganda to a monument of Africa's anti-colonial resistance. From November 15, 2024, Dekoloniale Memory Culture in the City will present a follow-up exhibition in the "African Quarter".
We would like to invite you to begin this special day with a joint memorial march in memory of the victims of Maafa - Africa's devastation through slavery and colonialism.
This will be followed by a ceremonial renaming event, in which numerous anti-colonial associations, initiatives and activists will take part, who have worked with great patience and perseverance to bring about the renaming.
