Dekoloniale Festival 2022 – Berlin, South, Germany

[De]colonial migrations
On Thursday, September 1, 2022, we opened the Dekoloniale Festival 2022 in southern Berlin, focusing on the districts of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, Neukölln, and Tempelhof-Schöneberg. We started at Mariannenplatz and in Studio 1 in the Bethanien art quarter and explored the emancipatory and resistant potential of [de]colonial migrations in workshops, panel discussions, theater, and performances. As in the period between the Berlin Africa Conference in 1884/85 and the Nazi seizure of power in 1933, these Berlin districts are still characterized today by numerous networks of actors of African descent who, despite their significant influence, are neither anchored in the collective memory nor visible in public space.
On Friday, September 2nd, we met with our guests from the former German colonies in Africa at Mariannenplatz for the Decolonial Africa Conference 2022 .
The focus of this year's festival was particularly on the artistic works and urban interventions of the three Dekoloniale Berlin Residents 2022, as well as biographies of colonial migrant significance and places associated with them, which we visited as part of a full-day decolonial city tour on Saturday, September 3.
On Sunday, September 4, we concluded the Dekoloniale Festival 2022 in exchange with our partners from Contemporary And (C&), the Berlin Biennale 12 and the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg Museum.
